Overview
TITLE: DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ENVIRONMENTAL LAW
COURSE DURATION – Three (3) years
SCHEDULE OF INTAKE : (Once a year) SEPTEMBER
PHILOSOPHY
RATIONALE
As a result of increasing environmental challenges facing the world, there is an increased need for innovative and well-designed responses. An array of tools has been developed at national, regional, and global levels to address these challenges and meet the goals of environmental sustainability as encapsulated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of 2015. However, the design of appropriate regulatory tools is complex largely due to the technicalities of the environmental field, and the fact that new and more advanced developments take place frequently requiring continued adaptation and innovation of strategies.
This calls for scholars and practitioners with multidisciplinary grounding and deep research capacity and competencies to generate knowledge that will support theory and practice in environmental law. However, there is currently insufficient expertise to meet this need, especially in the African continent. The PhD in Environmental Law is intended to fill a training gap in the region. It responds to the situation outlined in the philosophy of this course by providing students with an opportunity to address the environmental challenges facing the globe through a multidisciplinary and research-oriented approach. The programme has a bearing on development, economics, politics, ecology, and policy among others, and is structured to engage with other departments of the University of Nairobi. The course is designed to train to high international standards, to equip students to practice in the global market.
