Welcome to the Faculty of Law of the University of Nairobi!
I extend a special welcome to our incoming 1 st year LLB students and those joining the Masters and PhD
programmes this September.
As the oldest law school in Kenya, we have maintained a rich tradition of scholarly excellence and are
recognized among the best law schools in the continent. Last year we celebrated our 50 year
anniversary under the banner “UoN Law School@ 50” which gave us the opportunity to reflect on our
achievements. The icing on the cake was winning the prestigious CB Madan Prize which was awarded
to our doctoral fellows. Beyond 50,we look forward to moving the Faculty to the forefront of legal
education in the global arena.
With a full offering of undergraduate and post graduate programmes, we aim to prepare our students
for the dynamic world of practice in its multifaceted aspects. Our location in Nairobi, Mombasa and
Kisumu has ensured enhanced access to legal education. Beyond the traditional LLB, LLM and PhD in
Law, we have embraced multidisciplinarity and starting this academic year will offer Masters and PhD in
Environmental Law and Environmental Policy. Adoption of technology in our teaching, learning and
research has enabled continuity of learning during the COVID-19 pandemic through online and blended
modes of learning.
Our faculty are highly qualified and competent, with the highest concentration of PhDs in any Kenyan
law school. Through their wealth of publications and scholarly outputs they continue to make significant
contributions to scholarly and policy discourse as well as practical community engagement. Our centres
of excellence, which include the Maritime Centre/Fish Force Academy, Centre for Fiscal Studies and the
Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP) provide opportunities for
faculty and staff to engage in speicalised research. We have established many partnerships with
government, universities and international organisations which offer useful networks and linkages for
our faculty and students.
Since our establishment as a Faculty in 1970, we have trained thousands of lawyers. Our illustrious
alumni are spread throughout the globe and have made huge contributions in government, corporations
and civil society. It is notable that the current Chief Justice, Attorney General and Speaker of the
National Assembly, among other key personalities, are all our alumni.
As the law school of choice, we continue to attract the best students in the country and are building a
strong following in the region. We offer a rich student experience with many engagements beyond the
classroom, including moots and various student clubs. Our students have consistently excelled in moots
and have won many international and regional competitions. In 2020, the Drama Society emerged the
national winners in the National Drama and Film festival.
I invite you to learn more about the Faculty of Law through our website. We maintain an open door
policy and are happy to engage with you at all times.
