The Faculty of Law today hosted members of the Council of Legal Education (CLE) for an on-site inspection of its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme, reaffirming the institution's commitment to quality legal education, academic excellence, and continuous improvement.

The inspection forms part of the Council's quality assurance and accreditation framework aimed at ensuring legal education providers maintain the standards required for training future legal professionals.

Faculty of Law Dean Prof. Winfred Kamau noted that the exercise was a continuation of an audit process that had commenced earlier in the year and had already covered the Faculty's Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu campuses. Prof. Kamau emphasized that the inspection was not merely a compliance exercise but an important opportunity for reflection, accountability and institutional improvement. "We welcome the Council because this process is not simply about ticking boxes. It is about ensuring that we maintain our standing, quality and leadership as a premier institution for legal education," she said.

Representing the University Management, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Prof. Jackson Mande described the inspection as an important platform for engagement, accountability and continuous enhancement of academic programmes. He observed that the University of Nairobi Faculty of Law occupies a unique place in the history of legal education in Kenya as the country's oldest and largest law school, having trained generations of legal professionals who have gone on to serve with distinction in the Judiciary, Parliament, public service, private practice and international organizations. "The legacy of the Faculty inspires our commitment to maintain high standards in teaching, research, professional training and academic leadership," said Prof. Mande.He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen legal education through curriculum review, enhanced experiential learning, technology integration and increased focus on practical and problem-solving skills to ensure graduates are equipped to respond to the demands of a rapidly evolving legal profession.

Addressing the meeting, Mr. George Nyakundi, Member of the Quality Assurance and Compliance Committee and Audit and Risk Committee of the Council of Legal Education, emphasized othe importance of maintaining compliance with legal education regulations and accreditation standards. He noted that quality assurance processes play a critical role in safeguarding academic integrity, strengthening institutional effectiveness and ensuring that legal education remains responsive to professional and societal needs. Mr. Nyakundi further emphasized the need for sustained investment in infrastructure to support teaching, learning and research, while encouraging universities to continue nurturing a strong culture of innovation and scholarly inquiry.

 

The Faculty presented significant milestones achieved in recent years, including a comprehensive curriculum review, growing research output, expansion of student support services, and strengthened experiential learning through moot court programmes, judicial attachments, externships and legal aid initiatives.The inspection team was also briefed on the Faculty's robust research portfolio, including collaborations with national and international partners in areas such as environmental governance, maritime law, sustainable land governance, access to justice and human rights.Among the highlights presented were the Faculty's strong graduate employability outcomes, active research centres, internationally recognised moot court successes, and strategic partnerships that continue to enhance teaching, research and community engagement.

The inspection programme covered key areas including curriculum development, admission requirements, student enrolment, staffing, staff development, research and publications, library resources, student support services, governance, facilities and infrastructure.The visit concluded with a tour of teaching and learning facilities, including classrooms, moot court facilities, library resources and digital learning infrastructure.
