There was pomp and colour as the University of Nairobi students showcased their best talents at the 2nd edition of UoN Talent Day. Students from the 11 Faculties showcased dances, spoken word, songs and various performances at the Manu Chandaria Auditorium, University of Nairobi Main Campus on Thursday 9, 2021.
Speaking during the event, University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama, urged students to leave a mark while studying at the university. “Please ensure you leave a mark behind. University of Nairobi is the home of talents. We have recently seen Ferdinand Omanyala fly the University flag high, not just nationally but at the global stage. We have many alumni, some of them Nobel Laureates like Prof. Wangari Maathai”, he said. The Vice Chancellor urged students to leave a mark in sports, academics, research and various extracurricular activities. “Use your time here to nurture your talents, University of Nairobi is the home of talents, “he said.
Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, Associate Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, stated that London has a high concentration of talents due to its many universities and that Nairobi needs to borrow a leaf from London. “We need Nairobi as the highest ranked city in Africa thanks to the University of Nairobi. We shall put a high premium on talent harvesting. Talent is critical. My dear students, as you nurture talents, there is a big sacrifice you must make; the sacrifice to balance your academic work”, he said.
He added that, “Everybody has a chance to show their talents. We can all grow to become our very best”.
One of Judges during the event, Dr. Kimingichi Wabende, pointed out that the University of Nairobi needs to have more talent days. He encouraged students to come up with original songs, work on their stage presence, learn to present themselves and to relate with the audience.
The overall winners were awarded with Certificates of participation.
