A major breakthrough was marked at the Faculty of Law on 30th Janury 2025 as 10 visually impaired law students received MacBook laptops from inABLE Kenya. This initiative, made possible through UoN’s collaboration with inABLE Kenya aims to enhance accessibility by providing customized features that support learning and navigation challenges.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Margaret J. Hutchinson commended Mr. Julius Mbura, a UoN alumnus and Advocacy Officer at inABLE Kenya, for his role in the initiative. She urged the students to become champions of change and reiterated the University’s commitment to supporting students with disabilities in line with its Disability Policy.
Mr. Lawrence Mute, Chairperson of the Disability Mainstreaming Committee at the Faculty of Law, reflected on the progress made in assistive learning, noting the shift from braille and typesetters to advanced digital tools like MacBooks.
Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Winfred Kamau, cited Article 54 of the Kenyan Constitution, which guarantees persons with disabilities access to assistive materials and devices. She expressed gratitude to inABLE Kenya and applauded the students for embracing the training and technology to enrich their learning experience.
The event emphasized the role of technology in fostering inclusivity. Students were encouraged to maximize the potential of their new devices, explore artificial intelligence, and extend their knowledge to others.
UoN reaffirmed its dedication to creating an environment where students with disabilities not only navigate academic life with ease but also thrive—emphasizing that accessibility is a right, not an act of charity.
