The 69th graduation ceremony at the University of Nairobi was a spectacular and unforgettable occasion. This event not only marked a joyous celebration of academic accomplishments but also served as a heartfelt farewell to the esteemed Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi. The ceremony took place on Friday 22nd September as over 3,982 graduands were conferred with degrees and diplomas.

Notably, the Faculty of Law boasted two Ph.D. graduates and an impressive cohort of over 40 graduands who successfully completed their master's and undergraduate programs

The ceremony was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kiama who noted It was a momentous occasion, a culmination of years of hard work and dedication for the graduating class of 2023. The VC congratulated the graduates, highlighting the impressive numbers: 80 PhDs, 524 master's degrees, and 3,132 bachelor's degrees, along with 1 Fellowship Award, 35 Post Graduate Diplomas, and 211 Diplomas. Additionally, 50 pioneer students from Koitalel Arap Samoei Campus were honored at the ceremony. He further shared the university's new strategic direction, emphasizing the importance of research, people-focused approaches, digitalization, and innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry partnerships. He praised the outstanding achievements of the university's researchers and urged graduands to use their education to make a positive difference in the world.

One of the most poignant moments of the event was the recognition of Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, the University's fifth Chancellor and its first female chancellor. Prof. Gitahi paid special tribute to her, acknowledging her exceptional leadership and service to both the university and the country. It was revealed that this would be Dr. Rattansi's last graduation ceremony as Chancellor, adding a bittersweet note to the event.

The ceremony was attended by proud parents, faculty members, and distinguished guests, who joined in celebrating the academic accomplishments of the graduating class of 2023.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, representing the Cabinet Secretary, emphasized the government's commitment to supporting education, particularly the new student-centered financing model aimed at ensuring equity and access to education.

Dr. Inyangala also stressed the importance of universities aligning their programs with the country's development agenda and global dynamics. She encouraged university managers to establish strategic partnerships with private investors and industry leaders to provide students with practical experience and opportunities.

Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, reflected on her ten-year tenure and the significance of the number 69 in numerology. She also encouraged the university to continue evolving and adapting to meet the demands of the academic world.

Dr. Rattansi, in her farewell speech as Chancellor, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Chancellor and congratulated the graduates on their achievements. She encouraged them to use their education to make a positive impact in their communities, reminding them of the responsibility that comes with their newfound knowledge. She urged graduands to strike a balance in life and embrace lifelong cultivation of friendship.

Dr. Rattansi expressed her gratitude to students, staff, management, and the council of the University of Nairobi for their support during her tenure. She also encouraged the university to continue evolving and adapting to meet the demands of the academic world She acknowledged the sacrifices made by parents and guardians and thanked the government, sponsors, partners, well-wishers, and alumni for their contributions to the university.
