Field-class is an annual event for all third year geography and environmental studies students. The 2013 BA III field-class took place in Nanyuki County and its environs between 9th July and 13th July, 2013. The theme of the field-class was “Harnessing natural resources for ecological integrity, sustainable livelihoods and food security in Laikipia County and its Environs”.
The broad objective of the field-class was to explore ways and means of harnessing natural resources for ecological integrity, sustainable livelihoods and food security. The targeted resources included water, forestry, land, wildlife and livestock. To achieve the broad objective, the students were able to see and learn on-site (a) challenges and sustainable options in water resources management; (b) challenges and sustainable options in crop and livestock production; and (c) potential of the LAPSSET corridor project in Isiolo town’s growth and development. The field-class team comprised Dr. Samuel Owuor (coordinator), Prof. Elias Ayiemba, Dr. Stella Mukhovi and Dr. John Nyangaga.
This year’s BA III field-class was unique because it was co-organized and sponsored by one of our strategic partners – CETRAD (Centre for Training and Integrated Research in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands). The Department wishes to extent its sincere appreciation to CETRAD staff who made this field-class a success, and especially to the Director (Dr. Boniface Kiteme), Dr. Jennifer Kinoti and Ms. Caroline Ouko. Furthermore, we wish acknowledge the wealth of knowledge we received from all the field-based lecturers – be they farmers, conservationist, managers, etc. This was indeed a great team and a wonderful field-based experience for all of us!
