Prof. Winifred Kamau holds LLB and LLM degrees from the University of Nairobi and a PhD from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University in Canada. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya of more than twenty years’ standing, is a Certified Public Secretary (CPSK) and qualified for Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ACIArb).

Prof. Kamau is an Associate Professor at the School of Law, University of Nairobi and is currently Chair of Private Law Department at the School. She has extensive experience as a law lecturer, trainer and researcher, with teaching experience at universities in Kenya and Canada. Between 2011 and 2013, she served at the Kenya School of Law as Assistant Director in charge of Continuing Professional Development, Projects and Research.Prof. Kamau has published extensively particularly in the areas of Gender and Law and Non-State Justice Systems. Her other research interests are in Dispute Resolution and Financial Services Law.
She is on the Advisory Committee of equality effect (http://theequalityeffect.org) a collaborative research network on gender equality issues which sponsored the groundbreaking 160 Girls Case. She is also a member of Gender and Judging collaborative research group and of the UN Women Civil Society Advisory Group (Kenya). Prof. Kamau has consulted extensively with organizations such as the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, UN Women, and FIDA-Kenya, particularly in the area of women’s human rights.
