Prof. Winifred Kamau is Professor of Law at the University of Nairobi and is Dean of the Faculty of Law. She holds Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law, Master of Laws (LLM) and Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya of more than 38 years’ standing. She has extensive experience as a Law Teacher, Researcher and Consultant and has published widely in her research interests, which include Gender and Law, African Justice Systems, Criminal Justice, and Education Law and Policy. She has presented in numerous conferences and workshops locally, regionally and internationally. Prior to joining academia, Prof. Kamau practised law in Archer & Wilcock, Walker Kontos, and Kamau & Kamau Advocates. She has also served as Assistant Director at the Kenya School of Law in charge of continuing professional development.
Prof. Kamau has consulted extensively with various organisations including the World Bank, UN Women, UNODC and FIDA-Kenya. Prof. Kamau is a Board member of the Council of Legal Education (CLE) and the National Council for Law Reporting (KenyaLaw). She also serves on the National Steering Committee for the Implementation of Alternative Justice Systems Policy (NASCI-AJS). At the international level, she is a co-founder of Equality Effect and a member of several research collaborative networks in the Law and Society Association. In 2024, she was honoured as one of the top 50 female lawyers in Kenya by the Nairobi Legal Awards.
