The University of Nairobi hosted an interactive engagement between H.E Rt Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, Speaker of the UK House of Commons, and Faculty of Law students on Friday, 2 October 2026, at the Parklands Law Campus.

The engagement provided a platform for students to discuss issues affecting young people, including higher education, employment, youth participation in governance and leadership. The session formed part of Speaker Hoyle’s visit to Kenya and was designed to give young people an opportunity to share their perspectives and engage directly with a senior parliamentary leader.

Welcoming the Speaker, the Dean, Prof. Winfred Kamau, said the visit affirmed the University's standing as a place where young people are encouraged to lead, debate and shape public conversation. She noted that exposure to leaders of a long-established legislature offers students a rare, practical view of how institutions work, and how the principles they study in class play out in practice.

Speaker Hoyle described the session as a two-way learning exercise and encouraged students to engage robustly, ask questions and share their perspectives. He emphasised the importance of young people participating in society and contributing to positive change. Drawing from his political journey, Speaker Hoyle spoke about his entry into public service and his progression from local government to Parliament. He reflected on the importance of representing communities, maintaining personal principles and using leadership to create meaningful change. He also emphasized the importance of education, noting that barriers to education should be removed because education is fundamental to the future of societies.

The session reflected the University of Nairobi’s long-standing tradition of student leadership, debate and engagement on governance and public affairs.
