The Dean, Prof. Winifred Kamau officially opened the workshop on Enhancing National Inter-agency Capacity & Collaboration for Combating Maritime Security Offences: National Interagency Workshop on Implementation of the FAO PSMA

The workshop was held”, on 9th - 13th May 2022 by Nelson Mandela University in Collaboration with the University of Nairobi’s Maritime Centre- FishFORCE Academy East Africa (UoN-Maritime Centre). The UoN-Maritime Centre is hosted at the UoN Faculty of Law.

The FAO PSMA is thefirst binding international agreement to specifically target illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Its objective is to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing by preventing vessels engaged in IUU fishing from using ports and landing their catches

The Centre (UoN-Maritime Centre) arose from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that the University of Nairobi has with the Nelson Mandela University (NMU). One of the deliverables under the MoU was the establishment of a FishForce Academy at the School of Law to, among other things, conduct training and capacity development on fisheries crime, compliance, and enforcement
